I have an apparent solution for that. Leave so much crap on your ironing board that you can't use it either and the cat's will find some other inconvenient place to sleep ;P
Actually, because of current lack of space, the ironing board is folded up until in use. It was *IN USE* at that moment! I managed to grab back the still hot iron, and fling the chunk of scrap cloth over the clean cover just in time... Then I left them because they were cute, and I had to use the sewing machine instead.
Like cats on your ironing board.
