Sexy Laundry

The Orangeville Banner says:

Rehearsals for Theatre Orangeville's production of Sexy Laundry are well underway, but married lead actors Sandy Crawley and Mary Long are still on speaking terms. The play concerns a couple that's been married for 25 years who go away to a posh hotel to reignite their relationship. Grievances are aired and the two characters frequently talk at cross-purposes.
Director David Nairn says theatre-goers may see some of their own relationships in the lead characters' marriage. But while the play has its poignant moments, it is a comedy; the characters don't always see the humor in their situation, but the audience often will.
"I thought it would be really fun" to have a married couple play the married characters, says director David Nairn, calling his two actors "the perfect combination."
Crawley and Long are both seasoned performers, having acted professionally for decades. The couple has been together for 29 years in real life, and married for 19. Crawley, Long and Nairn are unanimous in their praise for playwright Michele Riml's script.
"Audiences are going to respond to this," says Nairn, and all three cite the play's ability to ask important, and sometimes uncomfortable, questions about the status quo in long-term relationships
"It pushes a lot of emotional buttons."
With a name like Sexy Laundry you'd be right to think that the show is aimed at an adult audience. The company is discouraging children under 16 from attending. The play includes adult conversations, frank talk about sex, and explores "elements of fantasy."
The show opens Oct. 25, and tickets are available from Theatre Orangeville's box office at 519-942-3423. Nairn expects it to be the "blockbuster" of the season and says that ticket sales have been brisk.
